How many times have we witnessed teams who have been outplayed and a goal or more behind suddenly galvanized and rejuvenated by scoring a goal. The vast majority of things a team or individual does on the field, is designed towards creating goalscoring opportunities. There is little more frustrating for coaches and players alike, than losing or drawing games because clear cut opportunities to score have been squandered. We often hear coaches saying“ The team played well, but we didnt take our chances”.

The reality is, playing well means taking those chances. Consequently, whatever aspect of attacking play is coached, the emphasis should always be on taking goalscoring opportunities. No matter what level a team plays at every one craves the goalscorer who has the knack of converting the chances created. The elusive players who find themselves in the right position at the right time, not by coincidence, but by anticipation and instinct combined with technical ability.

While there is a belief that such players are born with these gifts, it is a mistake to believe that skillful attacking, inventive and instinctive play cannot be coached. On the contrary, coached correctly these aspects will reap rich rewards in the following areas:
The attitude of players to take risks in the attacking third will be strengthenedThere will be recognition, and familiarity with decision-making in tight and difficult situationsThe difficult becomes accepted as the norm and not something to be fearedConfidence, which will be accrued by increasingly successful outcomes, will be developedThe 20 practices shown present a variety of situations from which goals are scored.

They are in no particular order and many of the practices can be used from young through to adult players. They are designed to help develop players to become more effective strikers for the team by among other aspects:Scoring goals via multiple finishing techniquesBringing others into the game with link-up and combination playChoosing and using “appropriate” finishing skills on demandMaking themselves available at all timesImproving decision-making and awareness in and around the penalty area..We hope you enjoy them and good luck with your team
